Denver Charity Donates Good Backpacks for High School

As the new school year approaches, the National Retail Federation estimated families will spend an average of $674 on needed back-to-school supplies and clothing—an amount many low-income families can’t afford.

Catholic Charities’ annual School Supply Drive is back to help bridge the gap between what families can afford and what students need. Donations go a long way in helping 1,100 children experiencing homelessness and poverty in the Denver metro area who are served by Catholic Charities.

One grandfather who received help with his grandchildren was grateful for the needed supplies.

“This helps me a lot because school supplies and backpacks are so expensive nowadays,” said Aaron Arreola, pictured with two of his three granddaughters.

Area schools and nonprofits receive the supplies that are distributed to those most in need.

“It makes a huge difference,” said Mary Gold, principal of Guardian Angels School, a Denver school where almost all of its 187 students qualify for the federal free and reduced lunch program. “I don’t know what we would do without these groups helping us. These families don’t have that kind of discretionary funding.”

On July 30, supplies may be dropped off at two locations in Denver. Students in need may also be sponsored through an online donation.
